Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa, Samoan Language Week, runs 31 May to 6 June 2026 and lands across Samoa Independence Day on 1 June. Schools, workplaces and councils across New Zealand and Australia mark it, and for a lot of families it is the one week of the year when speaking gagana Samoa in public feels normal rather than brave. What is Samoan Language Week and why does it exist?
It exists because the language is under pressure. Samoan is the third most spoken language in New Zealand, and yet the share of Samoan people in New Zealand who can hold a conversation in it has been falling with each generation born outside Samoa. Language Week is one of a series of Pacific Language Weeks run each year to slow that down.
In 2026 it runs 31 May to 6 June, and it overlaps deliberately with Samoa Independence Day on 1 June. Samoa gained independence on 1 January 1962 and moved the celebration to June so it did not collide with New Year, which is the kind of practical detail that gets lost.
What phrases should you learn first?
Five, and none of them are hard. Learn these and you can get through a whole week of small interactions.

What do you wear for Samoan Language Week?
Wear something that says a word. That is the whole brief, and it works because it starts the conversation for you. A print is beautiful and silent. A word on a shirt gets asked about.
The pieces that do the most work are the ones carrying a word or a number with meaning: Afakasi, for anyone who is half and has spent their life explaining it. 685, the country calling code, which Samoans read instantly and nobody else does. Ula Fala, the pandanus necklace worn by an orator. Each of those is a sentence you do not have to say.

Then the week is aimed squarely at you. Roughly half the Samoan population in New Zealand and Australia cannot hold a full conversation in gagana Samoa, and most of them carry some guilt about it. The week exists to lower the stakes, not to test anybody.

How do workplaces and schools mark Samoan Language Week?
Badly, if nobody plans it, and well if one person does. The pattern that works is small and daily rather than one big event on the Friday.
- A phrase a day on a whiteboard or in the team channel. Five words, not fifty
- Get the pronunciation from a Samoan speaker, not from a translation app. Gagana Samoa is badly served by machine translation
- One shared meal. Food does more for a language week than a poster ever will
- Let the Samoan staff lead it, and pay them for the work if it is real work. Being the only Samoan in the building and being handed the cultural programme for free is its own problem
The last point is the one most organisations get wrong. Cultural weeks are frequently run by the one Pacific person on staff, on top of their actual job. If that is you, it is reasonable to ask for the time.
On clothing, most workplaces relax the dress code for the week. That is when a piece with a word on it does the most work, because it starts the conversation without you having to.
Nothing here is sitting in a warehouse. Each piece is printed and sewn after the order is placed, which has two consequences worth planning around. The good one is that there is no dead stock, so a print does not get discounted into landfill at the end of a season and sizes that sell slowly still exist. The practical rule is three weeks from order to door for Australia and New Zealand, and closer to four if it is crossing an ocean. Work backwards from the date you need it, not forwards from today.
